Most of us have a pretty good idea of the kinds of foods to avoid when it comes to maintaining dental health, and avoiding tooth decay. But, did you know there are foods you can eat that will actually help to promote tooth and gum health, and prevent decay? It’s one thing to avoid sweets, but you can also be more proactive in giving your body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.
Here’s our list of the sometimes unexpected foods that will help you prevent tooth decay.
1. Cheese. Cultured dairy products like cheese can be beneficial to oral health in general. Eating cheese stimulates the production of saliva, which helps to keep teeth clean and neutralize acids. It also contains teeth loving minerals such as calcium, phosphorous and casein. Yogurt is another good option that contains both magnesium and calcium.
2. Calcium-rich foods. Along with dairy, there are other excellent sources of calcium such as broccoli, spinach, kale, bok choy, almonds, Brazil nuts, and dried beans.
3. High-fiber foods. These are beneficial for teeth because they stimulate saliva production. This group includes dried fruits such as dates, raisins and figs, along with most fresh fruits and vegetables.
4. Whole grains. Along with high fibre content, whole grains are good sources of B vitamins and iron, which are essential to gum health. Whole grains also contain magnesium, with is crucial for bones and teeth. In addition, whole grains are high in fiber.
5. Sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamin A, which is required for the production of saliva. It serves to act as a buffer in your mouth that neutralizes and flushes away acids that are produced before they can cause tooth decay.
6. Salami. Yes, cured meats have gotten a bad rep recently, but they are also rich in vitamin K2, which plays a role in dental health. You’ll also find vitamin K2 in butter and egg yolks.
7. Avocados. Rich in potassium, avocados help strengthen and prevent deterioration of bones. Potassium also plays a role in tooth decay in some individuals.
8. Nuts. These contain tooth protective phosphorus, and also act to stimulate saliva production – a doubly protective option for your dental health.
9. Black & green teas. Teas are antioxidant rich, and maintaining a good balance between oxidants and antioxidants is important in maintaining oral health. Black teas also contain tooth protective fluoride. Just remember to rinse your mouth with water after drinking tea to avoid staining.
10. Chocolate. We’re not kidding! The catch is that it is unrefined cocoa that is a good source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and other minerals – without all the sugar of chocolate treats. Try drinking cocoa drinks unsweetened, Aztec style, to get the benefits without the dangers.
