Porcelain Veneers…they’re not just for floors!

Porcelain Dental Veneers

When we look at ourselves in the mirror, or when we meet other people — teeth are often the first thing that people notice.

However, when our teeth are chipped, broken, missing or perhaps not as white as they could be, we tend to become self-conscious. The result? We smile less often.

As the years have passed, cosmetic dentistry has become more acceptable. After all, everyone wants to look good.

There are a number of cosmetic dental procedures that can be done to improve your smile and overall appearance. Today, let’s look at one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures: Dental Veneers. More specifically, Porcelain Dental Veneers.

Porcelain Dental Veneers are a great way to get the beautiful smile that you’ve always wanted.

But first, a few porcelain dental veneer facts:

1) Veneers can fix teeth that are: Stained, chipped, crooked or spaced; teeth that are too long or short, irregularly spaced and recessed.
2) They are strong durable ‘shells’ of porcelain that are placed over the front surfaces of the teeth.
3) They are natural looking and made of durable material.
4) The dental veneer procedure is a minimally invasive and conservative procedure.
5) Porcelain Dental Veneers resist staining.
6) Veneers can last up to 15 years or more if properly cleaned and maintained.

The dental veneer procedure

About ½ a millimeter of tooth structure is removed from the front surface of the tooth (enamel). This is actually considered to be a minimal amount of tooth removal. The reason for the tooth reduction is that we need the space to place the dental veneers and we don’t want them to look too thick.

Next, an impression (mould) is carefully taken of the prepared teeth and sent to the lab to prepare the actual veneers. About 1-2 weeks later the porcelain coverings are cemented onto the prepared tooth surfaces.

The dental veneer tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth

Porcelain Veneers are strong ‘durable’ shells of porcelain that are placed on the front surfaces of the teeth.

Aesthetically and cosmetically, the results are amazing and as mentioned previously, the treatment is very conservative…only a very small amount of tooth structure is removed.

We need to remove a small layer of tooth structure so that the teeth don’t end up looking too thick.

The veneers adhere to the surface via special bonding agents – special dental cement.
Veneers are long lasting and resistant to chipping and staining.

Dental Veneers cost less than you may think and can often be done in two short office visits.
