Is It Time for Your Annual Dental Exam & Cleaning?

Dental Exam & Cleaning

If you answered ‘yes’, then around the New Year is a good time to start. And that’s New Year’s of 2022 😉

Afterall, your oral and dental health is closely linked to your general health, so taking better care of your teeth and mouth gives you much more than just a great smile.

Here are some tips on how you can improve your dental and oral hygiene regimen heading into 2022.

Better Brushing:

Better brushing means brushing your teeth at least twice a day, every day, and using the best technique. Using a soft bristle or electric toothbrush, you want to brush the teeth at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line, using small rotating motions.

Daily Flossing:

We all know about it, but do we always do it? Chances are, the answer is not always. Keep in mind, bacteria forms on the teeth when it is exposed to food particles, and the length of that exposure is crucial. If you floss every day, you minimize that exposure, and as a result, help to avoid gum irritation and gingivitis.

Eating Better:

Easier said than done. This is another truism, but with dietary advice changing all the time, what does it really mean? The basics are always the same: minimal sugar, whole foods, meals prepared at home – essentially, avoid processed foods, and give your body the nutrients it needs to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Xylitol:

This naturally derived extract is a sugar substitute that actually helps to neutralize acids in the mouth, and reduces bacteria and plaque build-up. Many sugar-free gums now contain Xylitol, making them a good after-meal option to improve oral health.

Regular Dental Checkups and Cleanings:

It’s best to not skip regular dental check-ups, even if you don’t seem to have any problems. Your dentist is often the first to spot the signs of many health issues, including some forms of cancer. Professional dental examinations and cleaning can remove the stubborn plaque build-up that comes no matter how well you brush.
