The Canadian Dental Care Plan Coverage (also known as the CDCP) started in late 2023, first covering a few seniors. Now, it helps millions of Canadians of all ages cover dental costs.

The CDCP is Growing, and Ontario Leads the Way
The plan opened in stages:
- Seniors aged 70 and older were first, starting in December 2023.
- Next, people aged 65 and older joined.
- Then, children under 18 and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate joined.
- In 2025, people aged 18 to 64 were included.
This growth has been impressive!
Research published in the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association showed that the number of approved applicants in Canada rose by over 77% from August 2024 to May 2025. During that time, dentist visits more than quadrupled.
Ontario stood out. By May 2025, around 792,000 Ontarians received care through the CDCP. The province had more participating dentists and hygienists than any other province in Canada. What matters for your family is this: from the 2026 to 2027 benefit year, the CDCP will be open to all eligible Canadian residents, regardless of age. More Brampton residents qualify than ever.
Do You Qualify for the CDCP?
You likely qualify if you meet these criteria:
- You live in Canada.
- You filed your last tax return.
- And have a family net income under $90,000.
- You lack private dental insurance.
Your income level affects your co-payment, so check before booking.
What Does the CDCP Cover for a Dental Cleaning?
A professional dental cleaning, known as scaling and polishing, is a key benefit. For adults 17 and older, the CDCP covers:
- Up to four units of scaling.
- Half a unit of polishing every 12 months.
- One recall check-up.
- Topical fluoride
One important detail: the clock runs on a rolling 12 months, not the calendar year. So, if your last covered cleaning was in April, your next one is due the following April, not on January 1st.
Will You Pay Anything?
That depends on your household income. Here’s how it breaks down:
- Families earning under $70,000 pay no co-payment for eligible services.
- If you earn between $70,000 and $79,999, you cover 40%.
- For those earning $80,000 to $89,999, it is 60%.
Some dental offices also use balance billing, which is the difference between the provincial fee guide and the CDCP fee. It’s best to ask first. Our dental office confirms your dental insurance coverage beforehand. We tell you your share upfront – no surprises.

How Has CDCP Eligibility Changed Since It Began?

How Many Cleanings Does the CDCP Plan Cover Each Year?

If you need more, your dentist can ask for pre-authorisation. However, approval isn’t guaranteed.

Do I Have to Renew for the CDCP Every Year?
Yes. The CDCP is not a one-time approval. You renew annually based on your latest tax return. Missing the deadline can create a coverage gap. They won’t reimburse care received during this lapse.
