What does the start of a New Year mean to you?
Resolutions or should I say more resolutions? And what may they be? Exercising? Losing weight? Eating well? Stop smoking? Meditation? New hobbies? Play more, read more? Be more grateful? Enjoy the little things in life? Be more confident and self-assertive? The list can go on and on…
And then the next step, committing to the resolution…how often do they go unfulfilled?
Sometimes it’s just a little bit too much pressure. There are so many stresses in life that it may be hard to impose yet another one on ourselves i.e. consider this: cessation of smoking. A typical smoker may have started when they were 15 or 16 years old. Decades later, the habit has become a part of them. I can imagine the slightest stress and the individual runs for a cigarette to de-stress…So breaking a habit like this is easier said than done.
And if we do take on a new year’s challenge and don’t succeed how are we going to feel about ourselves? Probably not very good…Failed? Again?
Making a change is a personal decision and one that should be made when the individual is ready. Further compounding the problem, one also has to keep in mind that the holidays can sometimes be a stressful time i.e. family relationships, financial constraints…Maybe not the best time for a change.
So how about this? Say yes to a resolution but only when you’re truly ready for it.
The Dental Resolution…New Year’s or Anytime!
Try for optimal oral hygiene. And what do I mean by optimal? My definition is one who brushes twice a day and flosses once, but with the proper technique. You can review both of these in the following blogs, “Proper Oral Hygiene Techniques, Part One and Part Two,” posted on February 19th and 25th of 2012.
The Dental Wellness Factor
This goes back to our very first blog posted in July 2011, appropriately titled “Dental Wellness.” The basic premise was much like any other type of wellness…we’re doing a ‘certain’ something for ourselves that will contribute to our well-being. It may be exercising, eating properly, meditation or anything else that makes us feel well.
In the ‘dental world’ this involves conditioning our gums so they don’t bleed. Otherwise, bacteria from plaque can enter the blood and make their way to the arteries that supply the heart. The bacteria can set up deposits in theses arteries which can affect blood flow. And when the blood flow becomes compromised, this can lead to a heart attack.
We’re human beings, not machines. Going from zero to 100 km/hr in 10 seconds is not an option. Wellness is a slow and gradual process that if approached properly can make us more fulfilled as individuals and enable us to have more meaningful adult relationships…
